Legacy Strains

  • Acapulco Gold

“No stems no seeds that you don’t need, Acapulco Gold is badass weed.”

    — Cheech & Chong, “Up in Smoke”

Acapulco Gold might be the end-all-be-all Legacy Strain. Not only is it a favorite of celebrity stoners like Jack Nicholson and Woody Harleson, it was the first weed to get Jack Herer stoned. The Emperor of Hemp himself tells of listening to music and seeing the notes play with each other in the air. “Wow, this is the greatest thing in my life! This was the first time I ever even knew that music had music in it!” It is even rumored to have been sent to future Vice President Dan Quayle as a wedding present. Maybe that’s why he forgot how to spell potato?

This landrace strain came to the U.S. from Mexico in 1964, and immediately gained notoriety among the counterculture movement for its quality and potency. The name Acapulco Gold became synonymous with really good weed, thanks to its THC level of around 23%, an unheard of percentage at the time. The strain became so popular that the term Acapulco Gold was added to the Oxford Dictionary in 1965!

The effects of smoking this connoisseur weed are motivating and energizing. It’s sure to bring on feelings of euphoria with even the smallest toke. That’s why we’ve added this Legacy Strain to our Private Stash. Luckily, we have enough to share.

  • AK 47

What's the commotion, yo I'm not joking around

People learning about, what they're smoking

My oven's on high, when I roast the quail

Tell Bill Clinton to go and inhale

    — Cypress Hill, “I Wanna Get High”

If AK 47 were a famous family it would be the Jolie-Pitt crew. This multicultural strain is a mashup of Columbian, Mexican, Thai, and Afghani varieties. It is also one of the most awarded strains in history, and has won awards in both indica and sativa categories.

AK 47 was created in the early ‘90s by a biology student in Amsterdam. The origins of the name are a bit harder to trace. Some say it was named for the use of AK 47 assault rifles in the war-torn countries where its parent seeds were from. Others claim it’s a “one hit wonder,” packing the punch of a speeding bullet. A third theory that it’s named for the gunpowder-like smell that can be detected when you smoke it.

We’ll likely never know where the name truly came from. What we do know is that this sativa-dominant hybrid is not only award winning but a fan favorite as well. It produces a mind/body high that can both spark creativity and glue you to your couch for several hours, which might explain why it’s beloved by gamers. It also has myriad medical benefits, aiding patients experiencing chronic pain, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, and headaches. This is why AK 47 was a no-brainer addition to our Private Stash.

  • Blueberry

Get your lighters, roll that sticky, let's get higher

Got that blueberry yum yum and it's that fire

    — Ludacris, “Blueberry Yum Yum”

If you want the taste and smell of your weed to give you the munchies before you even light up, Blueberry is the strain for you. It’s also great for tricking your family into thinking you’ve been slaving away in the kitchen all day instead of getting high watching the Food Network.

Blueberry is the brainchild of legendary breeder DJ Short. Often called the “Willy Wonka of Pot,” DJ Short gave us this delicious bud, as well as the tasty Juicy Fruit and Vanilluna strains. Blueberry came about in the late ‘70s or early ‘80s, when there was a lot of experimentation with landrace strains from all over the world. Short was breeding landrace sativas with indica strains in an attempt to create plants that produced quality flower in a shorter time.

The result was an aromatic, dense bud that packs quite a punch. Blueberry has been referred to as “one hit and quit,” even by experienced cannabis users. It’s an indica-heavy hybrid that hits instantly with a head high and ultra relaxation that can easily couchlock the unsuspecting stoner. It is also incredibly useful to treat insomnia, ease stress, mitigate chronic pain, and help with depression and anxiety. It became insanely popular after winning Best Indica at the High Times Cannabis Cup in 2000, and is now brought to you as one of our Legacy Strains.

  • Jack Herer

“If you substitute marijuana for tobacco and alcohol, you’ll add eight to 24 years to your life.”

    — Jack Herer

Jack Herer: the man, the myth, the marijuana.

Although Jack is considered “The Emperor of Hemp” and was the foremost leader of the movement for cannabis legislation reform, he wasn’t always such a fan. He was once a conservative Republican, and divorced his first wife after she refused to stop smoking weed for him. He didn’t get high until he was 30 years old, and describes the experience as the best feeling he’d ever had. He asked his girlfriend, who had supplied the joints, “Why is this illegal?”. Just four years later he opened a head shop in Venice Beach.

In the early ‘80s, while campaigning for cannabis reform, Jack was arrested for trespassing and spent two weeks in jail. He used his time in lockup wisely, and began writing “The Emperor Wears No Clothes,” a history of hemp as a renewable resource and the systematic efforts of big business to outlaw its use. This book has changed the mind of many anti-drug crusaders and opened their eyes to the benefits of cannabis. It has also been cited for decades by champions for cannabis reform.

The Jack Herer strain, arguably the most famous sativa in history, was created in the ‘90s in the Netherlands to honor the pot pioneer. If you like an uplifting, mental, psychoactive buzz, this is the Legacy Strain for you.

  • OG Kush

Kush rolled, glass full, I prefer the better things

    — Drake, “Up All Night”

OG Kush is one of the most sought after strains of cannabis in history. It’s backstory is the stuff of legends. They say that hippies brought seeds back from the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan in the ‘60s, and they were bred with local strains for the next three decades. Then Josh D, one of the top growers in California, challenged Matt “Bubba” Berger to prove that Florida was growing better weed than LA. Berger, already a legend for his Kryptonite “Krippy” strain, grew some weed whose buds were so dense and colorful some of his friends started calling it “Kush Berries.”

Kush made its way to LA and the blossoming hip hop scene. This weed was so good, the term Kush became synonymous with all good green bud. In order to differentiate the strain Josh D brought from Florida they started calling it Original Kush, or OG, as in original gangster, legit, respected. It started winning awards everywhere it was entered, and gained the attention of Cypress Hill rapper B-Real. OG Kush became so popular in the late ‘90s that at one point it was worth more than gold! The precious metal that backs our monetary system was priced around $300 an ounce, while an ounce of the Kush was going for a whopping $500!

To this day sales for this Legacy Strain’s hybrids are off the charts and continue to win awards. In 2015 Wiz Khalifa launched his own weed brand, Khalifa Kush, promoting several hybrids said to descend from the original OG Kush.

  • Panama Red

Got a pocket full of money

Got me a long night ahead

    Quick stop by the Bulldog

    Score me some Panama Red

    — Van Halen, “Amsterdam”

Panama Red is rumored to be the best weed ever, and was insanely popular in the ‘60s and ‘70s for its psychedelic effects. This 100% sativa is another landrace strain. Harvested from mountains near the Panama Canal, they say one ton of this colorful bud was smuggled into northern California on a fishing boat.

The story goes that in the Bay area in 1969, after smoking a tiny joint with his connection and getting high as a kite, one weed dealer bought about five pounds of Panama Red, paying more than he ever had for bud. When he sobered up a bit he realized that he was going to have a tough time selling this weed to hippies for four times the price of a regular ounce. So he bought a pack of wraps, rolled up a dozen pinners, and gave them away to his regular customers.

Panama Red exploded on the San Francisco weed scene. People told stories of being so stoned they felt like they were tripping on acid, and everyone who smoked wanted to get their hands on it. By the 2000s it became hard to find Panama Red, as indica strains gained popularity. Lucky for you, Chalice Farms is bringing back this Legacy Strain.

  • Pineapple Express

“It’s almost a shame to smoke it. It’s like killing a unicorn, with, like, a bomb.”

    — James Franco, “Pineapple Express”

If you want to spark a debate among potheads, bring up the origins of Pineapple Express. Was it launched on the scene after the hugely popular 2008 stoner movie of the same name? Seth Rogen swears it was. Was it developed by G13 labs in the mid-2000s with Hawaiian and Trainwreck genetics as they claim? The world may never know, but that won’t stop us from enjoying “the dopest dope” around.

On paper Pineapple Express may seem like nothing special. It’s 17% THC content is merely average, but don’t let that fool you. You’ll get a potent, balanced high leaving you happy, relaxed yet alert, with a clear, focused mind reminiscent of pot closer to 25% THC. It is also often used medically to combat depression and inflammation, making it an obvious choice for our Private Stash.
